Day ten of @airali_gray #amigurumay2024 The fun part. I love gifting my makes to a select few, it’s lush seeing the looks on their faces when they open something handmade. My big two don’t let me photograph them so much these days, but this little dude loves getting in on the crochet action! He’s trying to steal #calypsothefrizzlechicken the most recent spring cal from @toft_uk #crochetersofinstagram #crochet #crochetgifts #crochetlove #crochetlife #crochetfun #crochetaddict #handmadegifts #amigurumi #amigurumay #suchfun

Day seven of @airali_gray #amigurumay2024 Hooks. My hooks have been rehomed from a very old well used case to a tin. There are loads in there but my two favourite are in the top – both 3mm one used with @toft_uk yarn and the other #tulip hook when I’m amigurumi-ing with other yarn (not my best photo but I’m tired!)#crochetersofinstagram #crochet #amigurumay #amigurumi #crochethooks #crochetaddict #crochetlove #crochetlife #crochetfun #crochetkeepsmesane #suchfun

Day six of @airali_gray #amigurumay2024 Fun stitches. I still find it amazing that with one simple stitch you can make many different shapes, then add in some special stitches – loops, bobbles, front post, back post, beads – lots of lovely texture is added.#crochetersofinstagram #crochet #amigurumay #amigurumi #crochetaddict #crochetlife #crochetlove #crochetfun #toftuk #toft_uk #toftaddict #edsdolls #edsbirds #edsanimals #alexandrasgarden #suchfun

Hair dying Henna Style

Like many people in their early 40’s the number of grey hairs on my head are increasing exponentially! My hair has ‘needed’ dying for several months.

I am really trying to live more sustainably. Back in July I started using bar shampoo and conditioner. Scouring for days and finally settling on a 2 in 1 from Peace with the Wild. My first bar is still going, the second in the cupboard ready when needed.

So my research into zero waste hair dye started. As a teenager I was an avid fan of The Body Shop henna dye. It was smelly, messy and took up the whole day! They don’t appear to sell it anymore. I found loads of vegan hair dyes, but they still came in plastic packaging. Finally I decided to take a look at Lush and discovered their Henna bars. I bought one (along with a few stocking fillers for the kids) and eagerly awaited my parcel.

Henna Bar

It arrived! All £13 of it, quite a large bar, smelled delicious too!! It sat in a cupboard in the bathroom for a few days, I was due a hair cut so there was no point using more than necessary.

Henna paste

So this morning I set about having a go. Since my hair is pretty short I cut the bar in half, chopped it into small pieces and poured boiling water over it. Then lovingly stirred until it was a delightful sloppy cow pat consistency. Smelled just like I remembered. Went on the same way, I was a bit messy! But then did have to take my glasses off when a dollop landed on them. I didn’t use all of it so I could have probably got away with cutting the slab into 3.

Looking good!!

I wrapped my head in an old plastic bag (I don’t buy clingfilm any more) with a towel over the top.

Patience is a virtue

Then I waited…

…and waited…

…and waited some more.

It was finally time to take it off! I was a a bit apprehensive taking the bag off my head. I needn’t have worried. My head looked like it was covered in dry mud!! Took me a while to get all the gritty bits out, once I did I washed it twice. The main difference between using the henna than ‘normal’ hair dye I noticed much less hair falling out.

The finished product!

Time then to dry and straighten. My hair feels really soft, and is super shiny AND is so lovely to touch. Still smells a bit herby but the hubby assures me that it’s not a bad smell. I’m really pleased with the colour, where it was grey it is a light chestnut colour the rest is a bit darker. It’s like I have my own unique highlights.

I think I may have found the way I’ll be dying my hair for the foreseeable. Yes it was messier and a bit more time consuming. But nothing has gone in the bin. I sat and snuggled my youngest whilst watching a film instead of squeezing the process in after the kids have gone to bed.

If you’re looking for a zero waste way to dye your hair then I think this is the way forward. I’m definitely a convert!

Working crochet

Work

On Tuesday the 1st of September I returned to work for my first proper day since the 20th of March. Since I usually only crochet in the evening this really should have no impact on my crochet schedule…oh how silly I am!!

I forgot that working full time also means taking the children to the Childminder’s and picking them back up again. It also means me running round like a crazy person cooking tea so that they have a proper cooked meal in the evening. It’s then bath time and story time, just in time for the husband to get home to take over.

While he’s doing that I do a quick tidy up then a HIIT session, meaning by the time the husband and I have sat down had our own tea and caught up on each other’s day there’s not many minutes left until it’s time to go to bed for it to start all over again!!

Advent peek!

I have a very tight schedule this year as I want to make ALL of my Christmas gifts AND I want them all done so I can enjoy my Little Box of Crochet advent box in real time when it arrives (on a side note, have you seen the spoilers?? It looks A-MAZE-ING!!)

Completed gift

I’m usually very organised having all my gifts sorted by October half term, that includes all the bits for the kids and hubby’s stockings. I’ve not bought a single thing this year – eek!! I have three gifts made and two others to sew together. Doesn’t sound so bad, but my crochet rate has decreased significantly since my return to work. Mostly because I am so tired and my eyes don’t work very well (despite my new glasses!!)

The only crochet I managed in an evening

Am I going to manage it?!!? Of course I am!! I am determined that I don’t buy much this year and that everything I make is using yarn I already have…pipe dream?? I don’t think so, I just hope work begins to settle down and I walk less than 5 miles each day around the school building! There’s 11 weeks between now and my advent adventure beginning. I will be ready…just make sure you remind me at every available opportunity!!

Day 3

WARNING!!! Second picture may be a trigger to some. Day three of #yarnfriendsrock #howibecameyarnyI was a little bit yarny, ducking in and out of crochet but I mainly sewed until my littlest was born. At 2 weeks old he ended up in ICU at #Alderhey in #heartfailure quite possibly the toughest experience of our lives. My mum brought my crochet over for me and I’ve been stuck to it ever since. I’m almost positive I was on the brink of PND/PTSD I was not myself and felt like a completely different person. Fortunately I realised I was on my way to a mental health problem, I went part time and threw myself into crafting, mostly crochet and a fortnightly sewing class with LOTS of old ladies. I will honestly say that it saved my sanity and I started feeling like myself again. #crochetersofinstagram #crochetsavedmylife #pnd #postnataldepression #ptsd #icrafttostaysane #crochetaddict #crochetlife #crochetlove #heartbaby #cardiacmum
